An individual who is seeking a career in psychology or counseling may need to earn a postsecondary degree to land the job they want. A master's degree might help propel a person into the workforce and obtain a high-salary job.

Recently, Touro University Worldwide (TUW) announced that it will begin offering an online psychology program in marriage and family therapy for degree seekers who wish to enter the counseling field. Students will be able to choose from psychology concentrations such as coaching, dispute resolution, pastoral counseling and meditation.

Michael Hamlin, chair of the TUW department of professional psychology, says that the program will provide new opportunities for distance learners who would otherwise lack the chance to earn a higher psychology degree. Online classes will prepare students for future internships and careers in counseling.

The program is scheduled to begin in 2011. Individuals will be able to attend courses online to complete the degree at their own pace.

Psychology careers are predicted to increase by 12% over the next 8 years, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics. A higher degree can help individuals embark on a career in this growing field in a small amount of time.
