Many people looking to make a difference in the lives of others with a career in psychology and counseling may find they need to add a postsecondary education degree on their resumes. Now people who return to school online to get their master's in family therapy can become licensed in the state of California.

The California Department of Consumer Affairs Board of Behavioral Sciences (BBS) has given its approval to Northcentral University's online marriage and family therapy (MFT) master's degree program, announcing that the online accredited college program meets the board's educational requirements for licensure in the state.

The university is the first out-of-state online school to meet the standards of the BBS in California, according to chair Dr. Branden Henline.

We have worked hard to design a curriculum and clinical training process that sets new standards for MFT education. With this achievement, we are truly breaking down the barriers on online Marriage and Family Therapy education and training, Henline stated.

Henline said the program originally started in 2004 with master's level classes specializing in psychology and introduced as a masters degree program in January 2010. NorthCentral joins only a handful of other online schools approved by the BBS.

The Bureau of Labor Statistics reports that opportunities for counselors are expected to be good through 2018 with job openings exceeding the number of qualified graduates.
