As the economy begins to rebound, the hospitality industry appears to be picking up steam as well. That's why it appears to be good timing on the part of Lackawanna College in Pennsylvania to expand its culinary offerings at the Hawley Silk Mill nestled in the Pocono Lake Region. The school recently announced the expansion at the Mary and Harry Kiesendahl School of Hospitality & Tourism Management, holding a private open house to present the program to the community. The school is also seeking donations in order to extend the program even further with more opportunities for students looking to add hands-on restaurant training on their resume. During this past inaugural year, the college was able to offer classes in culinary management at the renovated former mill, which now houses retail shops, offices and warehouse space. The next phase of the project will be to build the kitchen classrooms and laboratories space. The complex will also house a privately own hotel and a restaurant called "Glass," where students will be recruited for internships, according to the Hawley News Eagle. According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, job opportunities in the food service and hospitality industry are expected to be good through 2018. |
