Culture has been defined by art for thousands of years. In its many forms, the arts help unite and inform a culture of its shared values and aspirations. Careers in the arts are a chance to share this cultural heritage with others. The Susan Chambers Dance Company in Sugar Hill, Georgia, recently received a $25,000 grant from AT&T to provide underserved children in the community the chance to attend live dance and theatre performances and also to present more performances at community events in the area. Susan Chambers, artistic director of the Susan Chambers Dance Company, said that the grant would provide the company with the chance to expand their productions and "to replace needed upgrades to choreography, costuming and sets for the concert series of SCDC." Dancers and choreographers face stiff competition for jobs, with many talented applicants for each opening. According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, the number of new jobs expected in the field will grow more slowly than the national average for all jobs nationwide. Overall, the bureau predicts 6 percent growth from 2006-2016, with more of those opportunities going to dancers than to choreographers. |
