A recent study of emerging job trends has found that Boston, Massachusetts, is in the top 10 of the nation's largest cities for income and employment growth. According to the Global MetroMonitor study, comprised by the Brookings Institution, Boston placed 8 out of 57 metropolitan economies, the Boston Globe reports. Alan Berube, co-author of the study, said the Greater Boston area is on the path to a strong economic rebound thanks to increased demand in the professional business services, media and manufacturing sectors. "Manufacturing, which encompasses about 10 percent of the regional economy, accounted for 30 percent of growth in regional output over the past year," Berube told the news agency. "It’s a high-value industry, and it’s an industry that worldwide is on the rebound right now." The study found that manufacturing jobs in the U.S. grew by 2.5 percent in 2011. In all, 26 major cities gained jobs over the past year, including Akron, Minneapolis, Tucson, San Diego, Pittsburgh and San Jose. According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, there were 3.3 million job openings in the U.S. as of December 2011. |
