While unemployment numbers are beginning to fall, the reality of the job search is that there still are more candidates looking for work than there are available openings. Even so, a number of industries are having a difficult time finding qualified applicants, which makes this a perfect time for job seekers to focus on their accomplishments in order to show they are the right person for the job. A resume that places more emphasis on accomplishments will read better than one that simply lists off a job seeker's previous work responsibilities and experience, according to the Silicon Valley Mercury News. "You've only got seconds to impress someone that you've got something that other applicants do not have," Jim Young, director of talent acquisition at Ohio-based Huntington Bank, told the news agency. Candidates should also always tailor both their resumes and cover letters to include keywords from the job description to highlight their skills and show that they are relevant to the position. According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, there were approximately 3.2 million job openings in the U.S. as of December 2011. |
