With millions of Americans looking for work, job seekers new to the market and college students getting ready to enter the workforce for the first time must pay extra attention to make sure they have the job searching skills that will help them land a position.

Small business owner Jay Goltz said a bad resume and poor interviewing skills are two of the top reasons why a candidate cannot find work. He said too many resumes have errors, which shows a lack of attention to detail. Job seekers should always carefully review their resumes, being sure to have another person double check for mistakes.

Job seekers should make always show up for an interview on time and dress appropriately in business attire. A candidate should also always be prepared going into an appointment by making sure they do their research and know something about the company, it will help them show a prospective employer that they are excited about working there.

Goltz said that college students looking for an internship should always take the work seriously, as many companies will use interns to build a pool of potential employees.

According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, there were approximately 13.3 million Americans looking for work as of November 2011.
