With the holiday season fast approaching, job seekers may want to consider working a seasonal job in order to add skills to their resume and fill in additional work experience in order to bridge any gaps in employment. According to a recent survey of more than 1,000 employers, 51% of retailers expect to increase their holiday workforce, including the on-line photo-sharing service Shutterfly and Toys R US, according to Money Talk News. Professionals looking to land these temporary jobs always should try to apply for a position in person wherever possible. Because many holiday work is in customer service, candidates should be well-dressed and bring several copies of their resumes. Keeping in mind that full-time seasonal work is hard to find, candidates should be flexible about working weekends and evenings, and may even want to consider piecing together a few jobs that they can work on different days. Just because a holiday job is temporary, candidates should consider it a try-out for a possible long-term position. According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, there were approximately 14 million people in the U.S. who were unemployed as of August 2011. |
