As the job market remains competitive, many potential candidates will have to switch up the way they search for a new job.

It's important to remember that each job seeker will have to customize the way they market themselves in order to stand out from the competition.

Many older job seekers do not have to follow the outdated advice that they need to keep their resume to one page. Workers with more experience may need to extend their resume to a second page in order to highlight their wide range of skills.

University of Utah career counselor Dana Sowby said that recent college graduates rarely need to go beyond the one-page resume since they don't have enough experience to justify an additional page.

When it comes to landing an interview, Sowby said that job seekers should not call a company to try to arrange a meeting. She said a candidate can call a place of business to confirm that they received their resume, and should always follow up with a thank you note after the call in order to make a good impression.

The Bureau of Labor Statistics reports that the biggest job gains in July 2011 were in the health care, retail and manufacturing sectors.
