Aspiring entrepreneurs in the Washington D.C. area will get the chance to add a new specialized business certificate to their resumes through an innovative management program being offered by the A. James Clark School of Engineering and the Robert H. Smith School of Business at the University of Maryland this spring.

Now in its sixth year, the 2012 Certificate in Innovation Management (CIM) series will take place on alternative Fridays from April 13 through June 22.

James V. Green, director of entrepreneurship education for the school's Maryland Technology Enterprise Institute (Mtech), said the series of workshops was designed specifically for the startup professional to provide insight into growth strategy, marketing and raising capital.

"Seminars led by world-class faculty in business and engineering, in collaboration with entrepreneurs, angel investors and venture capitalists, aim to provide start-ups with the tools and relationships needed to succeed in an increasingly competitive landscape," Green added.

Speakers include investor John May, who is the co-author of "Every Business Needs An Angel," and entrepreneur Tien Wong, chief executive officer at Lore Systems Incorporated.

The Bureau of Labor Statistics reports that approximately 2.5 million jobs were created due to establishments that were less than one year old in the U.S. in 2010.
