Small Business Success Involves Doing What You Love

A former Texas lawyer is demonstrating that when it comes to entrepreneurship, sticking to what you know and love can often be a recipe for success.

A recent article on Law.com profiles former Dallas attorney David Buckner, who gave up the legal profession in 2005 to open Bikram Yoga Dallas with his wife. Bikram yoga is also known as "hot yoga" where the room's heat is turned up higher to further the benefits of the exercises.

"The best thing about my job is that when people come in, no matter how bad they feel when they come in, they always feel better when they leave, and I never got that in the law," Buckner told the newspaper.

Buckner explained that his interest in yoga was fueled by struggles with his weight as a high school student and his eventual success at losing 70 pounds, and noted that even though he had loved his work as an attorney, he had no desire to put in the long hours and time away from his family that the profession tends to demand.

For others who have an interest in becoming yoga teachers, the popularity of yoga has increased greatly in recent years and the Department of Labor Statistics envisions a 27 percent jump in demand for fitness workers of all types. The BLS notes that yoga teachers have various training programs to choose from, noting one by the Yoga Alliance that requires at least 200 training hours and has set standards for associated schools.
