In the traditional sense, the word entrepreneur refers to someone who takes ownership of a specific personal skill or marketplace niche to develop a means of living, or potentially, a profitable career. Though strong ideas, talent and enthusiasm promote successful business leaders they also may be aided by a network of support.

Celebrating its sixth anniversary, the National Latina Business Women Association (NLBWA) is hosting a conference this month in Sacramento, California to promote successful business practices among members.

Specifically, the conference will include educational workshops regarding methods to leverage media to expand the business, financial solvency and ways to distinguish a start-up from the competition.

"The Latina entrepreneur has officially left her mark on American business," said Cecilia Mota, President of NLBWA. "As a group, we are organized, motivated and dedicated to not only succeed as individuals, but to also serve as mentors and examples of what can be accomplished through unity and purpose."

The purpose of NLBWA is to create more representation, visibility, and networking for Latinas in the business world.

According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, the number of entrepreneurs with a college degree is 15% to 20% higher than the rest of the population. The median income for this group is about twice as much as other professionals.
