In an uncertain economy, it is more important than ever for workers to make sure they have skills to ensure they are marketable beyond their current position. Elana Zolfo, vice president of corporate programs and continuing education at Dowling College, told Newsday that she has noticed a trend in which people who are already employed are looking to increase their skill set. She noted that business writing, marketing, customer service and presentation skills were some of the most popular choices for adults currently in the workforce who were "contemplating their futures". The website's career columnist, Patricia Kitchen, suggests that employees may want to take note of sectors that have been identified as potential growth areas and look into moving in to one of those fields. A combination of learning new skills through further education and making the most of those gained at a previous job can help ensure that a job candidate is marketable, regardless of the financial climate and employment trends. |
