Having a degree provides people with an "educational edge", which is why a number of professionals are looking to head back into higher education.

National American University (NAU) revealed this week that the current economic climate is encouraging older people to head back to school.

It said that with the possibility of a recession on the horizon, a number of workers are considering going back to education in order to keep up in a "competitive" working world.

Despite suggesting that previous statistics indicate higher education enrollment slows down following periods of recession, the institution said that a number of career professionals believe going back to school during these times can give employees "a much needed edge".

The NAU said there are various benefits of getting a degree during troubled financial times.

"Research shows that individuals with at least a college degree tend to make higher salaries," said a statement from the university.

"Being an expert, or having specialized knowledge, can also make an employee more indispensable to their employer while simultaneously showing a seriousness about your job."

Earlier this month, Association of American Colleges and Universities board chair Daniel Sullivan stated that the organization is "at the epicenter of an inspiring movement" that will recognize liberal education outcomes are needed for 21st-century students.
