Even with all the training in the world, sometimes it's all about instinct and courage for some people to get the job done. A 25-year-old police officer entered a North Carolina nursing home last month and stopped a shooting rampage that eventually took the lives of eight people all by himself. Justin Garner was reportedly the only police officer on duty that Sunday morning and described the experience of searching for the gunman in the building "very scary" on the Today show. "He managed to get a shot off, apparently about the same time I did, because I never heard it, I never heard his gun go off," Garner said on the television show. Robert Steward, 45, was wounded in the altercation and later charged with eight counts of first-degree murder and a single charge of felony assault of a law enforcement officer. Police officials later said that had Garner not acted when he did, more people would have died. People with the right qualifications may find a satisfying career in law enforcement, which is expected to have an 11 percent job growth through 2016 thanks to a more security-conscious society, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics. |
