Having a career in law enforcement can be a lot more technical than you may think. New Orleans is thinking of following the lead of Charlotte, North Carolina and having its police department directly run the program that monitors pretrial defendants electronically with ankle bracelets instead of continuing to leave it in the hands of a private contractor, according to an article in the Times-Picayune. The director of the Charlotte police department monitoring division, Sergeant Dave Scheppegrell, recently outlined his program to New Orleans officials, the paper reports. He explained that it is simple and effective, and "if they don't do what they are supposed to do, they go back to jail." How best to run a program of electronic monitoring is a decision each police department ends up deciding for itself. Running a program requires administrative and social work skills as well as the technical requirements. Some law enforcement operations have the variety of skills and personnel available, while others may not. Policing and law enforcement is an industry where opportunities remain excellent for individuals who meet the physical and psychological requirements of being a law enforcement officer, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics. However, job opportunities in law enforcement may vary by time and place. |
