With mental health professionals facing many challenges in today's job market, Bastyr University is set to launch a new masters of arts in counseling psychology program for those interested in adding an advanced degree to their resume in order to specialize in the field. The Kenmore, Washington-based school said the program was designed to accommodate working professionals looking for a non-traditional classroom environment. Program director Dr. Charles Smith said the degree will include classes that take a holistic approach to counseling. "Our new program is different from most other counseling psychology programs in that it focuses on whole-person health, body, mind and spirit - allowing graduates the opportunity to find careers in private practice or integrative settings," Smith continued. "Another difference is that our classes will be offered on weekends to accommodate both working professionals and traditional students who desire an alternate schedule." Graduates of the program, which is set to begin next fall, will be eligible for licensure as mental health counselors. According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, employment opportunities for mental health counselors should be good, growing by 24%, with job openings expected to exceed the number of graduates from postsecondary counseling programs through 2018. |
