Aspiring mental health professionals know that hands-on field experience along with an advanced degree on their resume will help them land a job in the expanding field. Now, the University of Texas at Austin has awarded a grant to three local healthcare agencies to help train students earning their doctorate in psychology.

Included in the $1.6 million initiative is a 5-year grant to fund a new internship program through Scott and White Healthcare in Temple. The program, funded by the school's Hogg Foundation for Mental Health, will train 13 interns who will help the company expand its mental health services to thousands of residents in Central Texas.

Dr. Michele Guzman, assistant director of research at the Hogg Foundation, said the grants will help provide training to future mental health workers, as well as provide more services in areas that need it the most.

"It's a win-win opportunity to relieve a pipeline issue in the training of psychologists while addressing a mental health workforce shortage in our state," Guzman added.
