For people looking to pursue a career in counseling and research, the University of Kentucky (UK) has been ranked number 1 in the country for clinical psychology.

The recent study "Leading North American Programs in Clinical Assessment Research" by Texas A & M University psychology professor Leslie C. Morey, ranked the UK program top in the nation in the h-index productivity rankings.

UK's clinical psychology program director Greg Smith said that an impressive number of students who added a psychology degree on their resume from the school have had their research published in a variety of medical journals.

"We were thrilled to be ranked first," Smith added. "The h-index is an objective measure of a program’s national and international research impact, and it is gratifying to know that our research is playing such an important role in the field of clinical psychology."

The study of clinical psychology involves the combination of science, theory and practice in the field of mental health. Professionals must obtain a license in clinical psychology in order to practice in the U.S. and Canada.

The Bureau of Labor Statistics reports that job opportunities for psychologists are expected to grow by 12% through the 2018.
