For people who are interested in the way the mind works, and how people perceive things, psychology is usually their study of choice. However, one university is taking their psychology program on step further - into exploring the psyche of animals. Eastern Kentucky University students will have a new degree option this coming fall, a degree in animal studies, according to the AP. The new degree will be offered by the university's psychology department, and will explore on non-human animals, their interactions and relationships with people, evolution, history, and the influences that both humans and non-human animals have on each other's existence. The program will be lead by psychology professor Robert Mitchell, who told the news source that the program has potential to bring students from across the nation and possibly from around the world. Along with studying scientific theories, the program will also focus on the arts and humanities. According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, the number of people employed in psychology related jobs will increase by 12% between 2008 and 2018. |
