A group of Florida high school students reportedly had the chance recently to learn about the various careers open to them in the field of social work. According to the Jackson Sun, over 100 students at a local high school learned firsthand about the opportunities provided by local public service agencies. Some 15 agencies reportedly turned out for the event, featuring a variety of different specialties to help mark March as Social Work Awareness Month. "The students seem to be enjoying it. If they're interested in the field, there are many different areas they can help, like mental health, homelessness, alcohol and child abuse," social worker Lartyania Merriweather told the newspaper. If you're interested in pursuing a career in social work, the Bureau of Labor Statistics has identified this as a rapidly growing field with a wide variety of opportunities. Professionals can work with children, the mentally ill, the disabled and many other people in need of public services. Those with foreign language skills may find themselves particularly well suited for some positions. Overall, the BLS reports that social work jobs are growing much faster than average nationwide, with particularly strong demand for those trained to deal in mental health and substance abuse, with demand for medical and public health social workers also said to be rising significantly. |
