Psychologist may have found new clue in addiction
People who are curious about the human condition and uncovering what makes the human race tick, may have a natural gift for a career in psychology.

A psychology professor has conducted research that suggests there may be a different pathway toward substance abuse that involves depression and anxiety.

Andrea Hussong, Ph.D., will discuss her findings at a presentation later on this month scheduled at the University of Buffalo's Research Institute on Addictions.

Most research on developmental pathways leading to additions of substance abuse focuses on aggressive and acting-out behaviors, according to the school. Hussong's research suggest there may be another way.

"We find that anxiety and depression are more likely to occur as early as age two in children living with alcoholic or problem drinking parents than in their peers," Hussong said. "In turn, we know that signs of emotional distress in early childhood predict greater risk for substance use in adolescence and young adulthood."

Careers in psychology can be rewarding for people interested in unlocking some of life's behavioral mysteries. The Bureau of Labor Statistics expects the field to experience significant growth in specialties such as understanding behavior problems in teenagers.ADNFCR-1502-ID-19115644-ADNFCR
