Mental Health Coaching A Growing Field For Psychology Grads

29 August 2008
With 60 million Americans experiencing some form of mental illness each year, many psychology graduates are finding a new calling as mental health coaches for organizations.

Mental coaching expert George Purdy wrote on 3x24 that many enterprises are coming round to the importance of the link between good mental health and good performance - and as a result, the demand for mental health coaches or workplace counselors is on the rise.

Many of these coaches possess psychology degrees, he adds. In addition to their academic training, they must also be experts at motivating people and possess a keen understanding of human needs and behavior.

In addition to workplace counseling, psychologists can work in a variety of other settings and skill sets, the Department of Labor said.

These can include providing mental health services in hospitals or schools, carrying out training sessions on behalf of businesses or government departments and conducting research into a variety of scientific products.
