Some people view counseling professions as psychiatrists helping the mentally unstable, families in trouble or troubled youth. However, there are a number of counseling professions that cover various areas. Counselors can simply be consultants for doctors and families dealing with medical issues.

The profession of genetic counseling is on the rise, which can be a hybrid career for someone in both a knowledge of DNA disorders and mental health, according to MiamiHerald.com.

A genetics counselor is asked as a consultant to families and patients who are dealing with a genetic disorder, or perhaps to parents who are going to give birth to a child with defects.

"[They] understand the cultural, social and emotional impact of having a child with a genetic disorder," Michael J. Dougherty, director of education at the American Society of Human Genetics, told the news provider. "It's a nondirective type of counseling."

Counselors in fields other than mental health, school and recovery are expected to grow by 13% in the next 9 years according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics.ADNFCR-1502-ID-19530790-ADNFCR
