Psychology and counseling majors are some of the most popular degrees that students choose. Many employers are looking forstudents with this background, since it gives employers another way to diversify their offerings. The University of Memphis recently held their 2010 Career and Internship Expo, where more than 50 companies and government agencies came to meet with students about potential careers, according to the Daily Helmsman. Youth Villages, a nonprofit organization, helps children who have behavioral issues and is looking for students to participate in their summer internship program to see if they are the right fit for the firm. Michaela Beth deWit, a mental health counseling graduate student, and Brittany Hart, a psychology major, both took part in the program last summer and were present at the expo to tell people about what they can do with their degree. Youth Villages is primarly looking for people who study psychology, counseling and social work for most of their programs, according to the news source. "We like to hire our interns and students who have degrees related to teaching and counseling [who generally tend to be] the most interested in a full-time job [with us], but anyone who has a bachelor's degree and a passion for children can apply," Connie White Mills, public relations manager for the organization, told the news source. According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, employment of psychologists is expected to increase by 12% through 2018. |
