Individuals who want to help others through counseling may want to enter a career in psychology. However, a postsecondary education may be necessary for an individual to land the position they want in the industry.

Recently, West Texas A&M University (WT) announced that it will begin offering a new degree program for individuals looking to counsel school kids, according to the Amarillo Globe-News. The specialty degree will prepare students to enter the industry of child psychology. Graduates may be able to obtain a position as a grade school counselor or therapist upon receiving their degree.

"They are basically in a position to try to help students succeed academically, socially and emotionally," WT psychology professor Lana Fry told the news source. "Basically, looking at that whole child."

Previously WT offered a 42 credit-hour master's degree program for individuals looking to earn a postsecondary education in child psychology. The new program will require students to take 66 hours of credit courses to specialize in the field.

Employment of school psychologists is expected to increase by 11% over the next 8 years, according to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics.
