People looking to study a computing-related degree could benefit from taking a summer course that provides a solid foundation for further study. A number of colleges offer summer programs in computing fields such as computer science, graphic design and web applications. One such course in California gives prospective undergraduates an intensive mix of practical experience and academic instruction in different aspects of computer science, the Humboldt Beacon reports. Among the activities included in the 8-week course are using handheld devices like cell phones and personal digital assistants to design a brand new software concept, as well as preparing a poster, explanatory pamphlet, technical article and oral presentation explaining the application. In addition, the course helps to develop practical career skills such as teamwork, while also giving resumes a boost for the internship or job markets. Obtaining a degree in computer science can lead to careers in areas such as software engineering, database administration and systems analysis, according to the Department of Labor. Overall, the computing sector is expected to be one of the fastest growing in the entire US economy over the years to 2016, it added, with software engineering alone forecast to grow by 38%. |
