Grant Hopes to Generate Interest for Careers in IT
Though entrenched in a new field, information technology experts are showing that contributions from their industry are just as valuable to society and in demand as those from science, business and the arts. Beyond technical jargon, some fields see IT professionals as elemental aspects for success, and a vital part of planning for the future.

Recognizing an escalating demand for information technology professionals, and a current shortage of qualified experts and teachers, the National Science Foundation awarded UCLA's Graduate School of Education & Information Studies a grant to cultivate the industry. Specifically, the $2.5 million grant will fund a professional development program for computer science teachers in Los Angeles high schools.

Jane Margolis a senior education researcher at the University commented, "There is a severe shortage of high school teachers who have both computer science content and pedagogical knowledge to teach a college-preparatory level computer science curriculum."

A new program supported by the fund, Teachers Are Key, will attempt to engage students who are typically confused with computer literacy courses.

The Bureau of Labor Statistics determined that the computer scientists and database administrators field is expected to grow by 37% until 2016, which is about 28% more growth than the average occupation over the same time period.
