As social media continues to integrate its way into everyday life, various companies and individuals are using social networks at a rapid pace. Because of this, many of the biggest providers of social media including Facebook and Twitter are looking to increase their employment opportunities to help in their information technology (IT) and telecommunications. Facebook recently broke ground in Prineville, Oregon, to create the company's first custom data center, according to Information Week. The estimated cost of the project is estimated to be $188.2 million. Data centers are large telecommunications hubs that typically act as a storage facility for a company's programs. Facebook's newest creation plans to be energy efficient, with a cooling system that uses water to cool the air, for up to 40% of the year. Heat from the computers' servers will be used to heat the facility. The data center will also employ 35 full-time IT workers to run the programs, in addition to an unknown number of staff that will be used for up-keeping purposes such as janitorial work, according to The Register. The IT profession, which typically occupies data centers, is expected to increase 18% by 2018, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics. |
