A university in Maine is reportedly working to attract more young women into math and science careers.

A recent report on WCSH6.com notes that for 23 years, the University of Maine at Orono has been hosting an "Expanding Your Horizons" event that aims to boost the representation of women in technical fields.

The report says that the enrollment of women has increased on the campus by 30 percent since 1982 with the help of such efforts, while 400 girls participated at the university's latest event.

A number of other educational institutions have been working over the years to attract more women and girls to work in math and sciences. This shortage of workers is also felt in the educational profession, where a number of districts have had trouble finding qualified people to teach these subjects.

The Bureau of Labor Statistics has projected faster than average growth in demand for fields like computer and information systems managers as well as an 18 percent jump in demand for computer support specialists and systems administrators.
