Computing Skills Can Build Hybrid Careers

As industries evolve and economic concerns push the case for multi-skilling, computing graduates could give themselves an edge in the job market by augmenting their IT knowledge with seemingly unrelated skills.

That is because in the current job market, employers are increasingly looking for individuals who can cover numerous skill-sets and "hybrid jobs", the Boston Herald stated.

The site said there are currently "hundreds" of hybrid openings available - many of which use some elements of IT and computing.

IBM in particular has a number of these positions, including jobs that mix IT skills with requirements for knowledge about subjects as diverse as marketing, public health and petroleum exploration and production.

William Pulleyblank, vice-president of IBM's Center for Business Optimization, said: "We need people who can talk the language of [different industries] and at the same time can talk about how IT can really help."

In a recent poll by Jobfox, computing and IT jobs made up six of the top 20 most in-demand professions during a recession.

They include software design and development, network and systems administrators and database administration.
