The field of information technology is continually showing that its value exceeds knowledge of computer processors and the latest software. Throughout the business world, those interested in pursuing careers in information technology find that their skill with computers enables a series of promotions. Beyond technical jargon, businesses see IT professionals as necessary for developing sound business strategies.

One IT expert's launch to the top of his company was largely influenced by his deftness with computers. The IT services business Quality Systems announced that Phillip N. Kaplan has been appointed the company's chief operating officer, Reuters reports.

The promotion to the company's COO position caps a 20-year career for Kaplan in the software and technology services industry.

Steven T. Plochocki, president and CEO at Quality Systems told the news source, "In addition to his decades of experience within the information technology sector, Phil's firsthand knowledge of the company since serving as a Board member for the past 15 months, will prove invaluable." He added that Kaplan's IT experience will the company in developing "its operations and growth strategy."

The Bureau of Labor Statistics determined that the computer scientists and database administrators field is expected to grow by 37% until 2016, which is about 28% more growth than the average occupation over the same time period.
