A period of unemployment can be challenging for any worker, but adopting the right attitude and behaviors can help minimize difficulties. According to MSN Money columnist Liz Pulliam Weston, when out of work it is imperative that people do their best to stay positive and energetic, which may include seeking the advice of experts about job-hunting strategies. Although family and friends may provide valuable emotional support, a job-seeking "board of directors" could be especially helpful for tailored guidance, she explains. One often overlooked action is to let business contacts know about a change in job status, as well as a current email address and phone number. Ms Weston suggests that this could lead to unexpected job opportunities, particularly as business contacts are likely to have a good knowledge of the job-hunter's skill set. Finally, Ms Weston warns people to make sure they budget carefully to avoid unnecessary financial stress that could distract from a job search. Prioritizing bill paying in order of importance can help people organize their finances. A recent article in the Wall Street Journal suggested that a period of unemployment may provide the perfect opportunity to retrain for a new career. |
