A new report has found that a person's risk of unemployment is directly related to the type of college degree they have on their resume, but at the same time, professionals with a postsecondary education still have a better chance of finding a job than those with only a high school diploma.

The study by the Georgetown Center on Education found the unemployment rate hovered around 30% for job seekers with only a high school diploma, well above the national average of 8.9%.

According to the report, people who have a technology-related degree on their resumes, including those who can write software and develop new applications, face a better chance of finding a job than those with other degrees, with the jobless rate relatively low, at 5.4% for recent graduates in engineering and the sciences.

The study also found a correlation between a professional's college major and earnings, with the average salary for recent college graduates varying from $55,000 among engineering majors to $30,000 for those who studied the arts, psychology and social services.

The Bureau of Labor Statistics reports that professionals with an advanced degree on their resume can earn $1,000 more per week than those with some or no college education.
