Green technology jobs are quickly growing, amidst a slowly recovering job market. In order to spur a higher job growth rate, along with helping the environment, one state's new proposed energy-efficient standards may create thousands of jobs. According to The Herald, new energy standards in South Carolina have the ability to create more than 22,000 jobs in the next 15 years. Policy director for the American Council for an Energy-Efficient Economy, Suzanne Watson explained to the newspaper that the state needs to make energy-efficiency a main priority, especially during the current economic climate. The South Carolina Businesses for Clean Energy organization, along with the Electric Cooperatives of South Carolina, organized a roundtable discussion to talk about the benefits of creating new energy policies. Currently, 30 states, have renewable energy standards, which allow them to discover new energy efficiency policies and explore ways to generate power in the future. The potential to create 22,000 jobs in the state is huge, since that will more than double the amount of jobs that the new Boeing plant will bring to the state later this year. That is extremely important, especially since the unemployment rate is hovering at 9.5%, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics. |
