A successful career in marketing requires qualities such as persistence, self-belief and patience.

That was the advice of Karen Alter, senior vice president at marketing firm Borshoff, who told a group of prospective marketers that candidates will be required to face rejection and then immediately bounce back - both in their job search and in the career itself, Dawgnet student newspaper reports.

"You're going to hit a lot of roadblocks and there are no right or wrong answers - you must have patience and perseverance," she advised.

Meanwhile, assistant director of public relations for the Indianapolis Colts Vernon Cheek explained that self-assurance was one of the most important qualities for a marketing role.

"We look for people who can handle themselves well in any situation. If you're not confident, you're not going to survive," he said.

Other skills necessary for a marketing career include a strong writing ability, creativity and a knack for working well under deadline.

A bachelor's or master's degree is advisable for those pursuing this type of role, with an emphasis in business administration and marketing. Recommended courses include business law, economics, accounting, management, finance and statistics.

According to the Department of Labor's latest data, median yearly earnings of market research analysts are $58,820, while marketing managers can earn around $98,720. Both figures may vary considerably based on experience, location and employer.
