Some people are heading back to school in order to explore and discover new passions and career paths. One accounting graduate has made it her job to use her accounting skills to help others with their taxes. According to Conroe Courier News, Terri Washburn never thought that she would become a small business owner who worked on tax planning and individual income tax returns. It wasn't until she and her husband moved to Georgia that she first even considered accounting as a job - she had previously worked as an industrial engineer. "I completely changed career fields," Washburn told the news source. "I've learned that I really liked accountancy and helping people navigate the tax world successfully." After working at a tax office in Atlanta for a year, she went back to Lone Star College - Montgomery to become a licensed certified public accountant. During her time at LSC, she learned that the college was developing an advanced technical certificate in accounting, where the coursework would serve as a qualifying education credit by the state if she wanted to take the CPA licensing exam, according to the news source. She was one of the first students to enroll in the program. She is now the owner of her own small tax business and has set up an accounting program in her local community to teach people basic accounting skills for their organizations and daily life. According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, employment of accountants is expected to increase by 22% through 2018. |
