As the debate rages on about the benefits of adding a liberal arts degree to a resume in today's competitive job market, the University of Texas at Austin has launched a new advanced program called human dimensions of organizations (HDO), which the school is calling a new "liberal arts education for the modern professional." The new masters and executive seminar program will focus on helping working professionals analyze how businesses are influenced by such things as history, new media and psychology in order to help improve the workplace environment. Art Markman, professor of psychology and marketing at the university and founding director of the HDO, said the program will help working people understand the global marketplace while generating real-world skills that will improve the function of businesses and nonprofit organizations. "In this competitive work environment, business leaders realize that an understanding of their employees and customers is crucial for success," Markman added. The professional seminars will begin in February, with the specialized masters of arts slated to get underway in the Fall of 2013. According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics some of the most common occupations for those with a liberal arts degree on their resume include management, graphic design, teaching and social work. |
