University of Iowa Launches New Spanish Creative Writing Program

Officials at the University of Iowa (UI) say they have added a new liberal arts graduate course that will help enhance the school's creative writing program for the increasing Hispanic population.

The school recently announced that the Iowa state Board of Regents approved UI to establish a master of fine arts program in Spanish creative writing for the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences and the Graduate College, according to the Iowa City Press-Citizen.

John Keller, told the news agency that the program will attract students who want an advanced degree in on their resume as they pursue a career in writing and creative writing education both stateside and abroad.

“It’s a program that’s designed akin to the Iowa Writer’s Workshop, but it’s in Spanish,” Keller said. “It’s attracting to all sorts of writers in the Latino and Hispanic community both nationally and internationally.”

The 2-year program, which will focus on pose and poetry, is the first of its kind to be offered in Iowa.

According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, job opportunities for authors, writers are expected to grow by 15% through the end of the decade, with an increase in demand for writers with online and multimedia experience.
