As many in the education community debate whether having a liberal arts degree on a resume will help graduates succeed in today's competitive job market, Kiplinger Personal Finance has come out with its annual list of the best value schools for those looking to study the humanities.

Pomona College in California ranked number 1 in overall value, followed by Washington and Lee University in Virginia.

Jane Bennett Clark, senior associate director for Kiplinger, said the magazine took a look at liberal arts colleges that provided outstanding academics with a great economic value.

"The institutions on Kiplinger’s rankings for best value in private colleges represent schools that provide high-quality academics as well as affordable cost even in these tough times," Clark added. "With money tight and the college choice so important, you have every reason to expect the best bang for your buck."

Other schools that rounded out the list included Princeton, Cornell and Gustavus Adolphus College in Minnesota.

According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, some of the most common occupations among liberal arts majors post-graduation include management trainee, graphic arts and social work.
