As more students look to add additional specialized degrees to their resumes in order to be better prepared for entering the workforce, Brown University will launch a new graduate school dual degree initiative for the study of the humanities. The new program, funded by the help of a $2 million grant from the Andrew W. Mellon Foundation, will allow doctoral candidates to also pursue a master's degree in a secondary field while they continue to earn their postdoctoral degree. Graduate student Matteo Riondato, president of the graduate school council, told the Brown Daily that the program targets students interested in pursuing two distinct areas of study. "Although the doctoral degrees are meant to be very focused on your very narrow field of interest, I think more and more students realize that a breadth of interest is useful, and more and more research is going toward mixing different fields that were not considered to be similar," Riondato added. The Rhode Island school said application deadlines for the new program will likely be in February for next fall's semester. |
